Unsecured Visa Debit Cards

Secured Visa cards, unsecured Visa cards....these terms may be foreign to you unless you've had credit problems. But to those who have had credit problems, they are very familiar terms.

Secured vs. Unsecured
Secured cards are cards you've paid money into prior to use. Unsecured cards are more like traditional credit cards--they're more like mini-loans. All too often, unsecured cards lead people into credit card debt and in some cases, credit problems. When/if this happens, a secured card is the only option. However, secured cards help people rebuild their credit. Someone who's had a good track record with a secured Visa, for example, might be able to get an unsecured Visa. Good behavior with that could lead to lower interest rates--and big savings.

Practice Makes Perfect
Sometimes when people can't get a credit card at all, they might be able to get an unsecured Visa debit card through their bank. This gives you credibility in the eyes of retailers, airlines, hotels, etc. After all, you can't purchase airfare or reserve a hotel room these days without a credit card, but unsecured Visa debit cards give you that power (as long as you have the money in your checking account to cover it). In many ways, unsecured Visa debit cards require even more discipline than a secured card because the money in your checking account goes for other bills, whereas the money on your secured card is strictly to make purchases. With an unsecured Visa debit credit card, you have to be aware of how much money is in your checking account and how much of that is required for rent, utilities and other bills before you start making purchases (even necessary ones). This teaches you good budgeting skills as well as better spending habits. Thus the beauty of unsecured Visa debit credit cards when it comes to helping you rebuild your credit.
